Some folks will hear this speech and feel offended, ashamed, or embarrassed. That’s not my goal. What troubles me is how, every time we try to have an honest conversation about Black and white, harm and repair, people rush to defend themselves instead of facing the facts. This history is not an attack on anyone alive today; it’s a record of what our government did, and what it still hasn’t fixed. I’ve been ready for these conversations. Just watch how quickly some people will pivot from the details in this video to “what about…,” instead of sitting with what was actually said. That’s how we stay stuck, and how the same harms get recycled generation after generation. Let’s stay focused, y’all, on how we got here and why it still matters right now. Members of the Trump administration helped lay the foundation for this argument when they embraced the idea that “if government harms you, government owes you.” They didn’t build that idea with Black America in mind, but it opened a door to a light in the midst of its darkness. I’m not asking anyone to feel guilty. I’m asking us to be honest, stay with the facts, and talk about what real repair looks like, together.
